Journey of Faith Friday: Scripture

Lamentations 3:22-23


Because of the LORD's great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail.  They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. (NIV)


As I walked along the sidewalk of the University of Kentucky I pulled an index card from my jean pocket.  I glanced at the verse, said it aloud, glanced back again.  They are new every morning!!  I would think, today is a new day.  God loves me.  He is faithful.  He offers unfailing compassion.

God has reminded me of these verses time and time again in many different seasons of life.  I will never forget waking up many winter mornings before we left Kentucky clinging to these verses.  I needed them.  I needed Him.  His mercy.  His compassion.  His forgiveness.  His second chances.  During that season I said and did a lot of hurtful things.  I felt swallowed up by life around me, but God showed me that His compassions never fail.  Just as He was faithful to Israel He was and is faithful to me!

Through these verses, and the entire book of Lamentations, God has taught me that my failures and my disobedience may result in consequences, but they do not change His love for me.  They do not affect His faithfulness.  Praise the LORD!

Ah, a love resting in that Lamentations verse!

I remember reading 1st John while in college and having a real 'ah-ha' moment.

I'd been a Christian for some time (accepted christ while at bible camp in jr. high) but somehow didn't completely grasp the magnatude of that choice until I was a bit older and wiser. Until then, I tried to be a 'good christian girl' by 'doing good' - going to church, attending bible studies, praying when I felt down - ect.

While in college I was going through a time of being infatuated with being 'in love' constantly wondering if this guy, or that guy that I knew or had briefly dated could be 'the one'.

Reading 1st John alone in my dorm room (on Valentines day!) re-grounded me that GOD IS LOVE -
Wow, what a revelation! I became content to rest in His perfect Love and seek out in more authenticity His wisdom and peace over my own strivings.

I didn't get a chance to comment earlier with Jack being fussy, but what a great verse! I never noticed the part that reads 'They are new every morning'... great insight.

Great post! Thanks for sharing your insight on this scripture. Where would I be without his mercy, His new mercies every morning?! I am so unworthy. I started reading Crazy Love on the plane ride today... it spoke a lot about God's love and how we cannot even begin to put into words how great and holy He actually is. I would recommend after you finish Radical... I'm starting Radical next.

Yes, what a wonderful promise from the Lord. Thanks for sharing this - countless times I have needed reminding that I can always start again - that every day is new with Him.
I'm having issues pasting your graphic into my blog, so I'll just share my verse here:
'Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death.' Romans 8:1-2 I was struggling with some past sins, and one night while in tears, God clearly reminded me of this verse. Sorry to share here - just seemed easier at the moment :)

I was taken by surprise when I read your verse, Amber....apparently I've viewed that verse as MY verse!

David and I together, and I, individually, have recited and prayed that verse so often during the last 15 years or so....in some of the challenging seasons it was the first thing on my lips after I woke up and the last thing on my lips before sleep.

I so appreciate the transparency in your story, and am grateful to be able to "see" your journey of faith from your "inside Amber" perspective of that painful chapter, and to be able to say, "yes, God, you did work, you did heal...and you seem to be bringing redemption and life from that chapter."

I'm finding writing the "scripture story" I've chosen quite challenging ...I'll do my best to get it finished and linked this week.

aaargh! I've lost everything I labored to write yesterday for this assignment! I kept losing the paragraphs I thought I'd saved last week, too. Apparently I didn't check the "last saved time" before I exited. grrr
